Nudge to Self

Thinking about future projects and options, feeling panic at the thought that I’m entering my 10th year in my first job, remembering about the “where do you see yourself in 5 years” questions during my job-hunting days fresh out of college – those are the things that I’ve been pondering on lately. I know; it’s depressing. And I don’t have any plan just yet. I don’t mean that I want to resign from my current post, at least not anytime soon. Stability is still the priority. They say the best way to be rich and free at the same time is to be self-employed – start a business or something. The thing is, I’m not particularly versed in economics and I hate math in so many forms, so that option may be quite a stretch; most importantly, I don’t currently have the finances to start anything. I’ve heard about friends venturing into stock trading, so I did research on futures trading. It gave me nosebleeds. I don’t want to get filthy rich anyway. I just want to live comfortably and not at all filthy. So how do I start the change? I believe these things have their way of being revealed. I just know I don’t want to stand still and wait. Nobody’s getting any younger.

Looking Good, Fed

He may be dropping to no. 2 in the world ranking in a weeks’ time; he may be losing confidence and tournaments lately, but you can’t say Roger Federer doesn’t have style!

Here’s TheFed carrying the Swiss flag at the opening ceremony of the 2008 Bejing Olympics. I got the photo from tennisforum.com and the highlighted part is obviously a mistake.

He looks good in red, no? I can imagine him driving a red Ferrari F430. I bet this guy doesn’t need car insurance, no matter how many millions his car(s) costs. With his tour schedule, I wonder if he even drives at all. Tennis stars have such a globe-trotting lifestyle.

Welcoming Vien

When we visited a friend who recently gave birth, we brought some baby clothes and bath products for the newborn and some fruits for the mother. It was quite funny that we overestimated the little boy’s size! He was but two weeks old and we bought some shirts that would fit a one-year old (possibly). I so wanted to hold the baby but in the end I got too cowardly; he was so soft and fragile that I vowed to just come back after a few months so I can play with him. As author Dorothy L. Nolte said, “Of all the joys that lighten suffering earth, what joy is welcomed like a newborn child?”

Outbidded

I’m sad today because I lost the bidding on the Cinderella (starring Lea Salonga) tickets I’ve been drooling over at Ebay. Well, sort of. I stretched my budget for as high as I could, even e-mailed and texted the seller to ask if she can end the auction early for me (which is welcome per the product description) and I’ll deposit the payment at once to her savings account, but I guess (maybe/probably/I don’t know) it’s not meant to be. When the bidding price reached my maximum, I gave up. It’s still much, much lower than the actual ticket price and the seats are very good (almost front-row seats at the orchestra center), I decided to stop pushing it; I don’t know how much the other bidder is willing to pay for those precious tickets and I have to set a limit to my spending. Instead, I’ll go to SM Mall of Asia tomorrow to look for available seats, albeit it will surely be at a much less appealing location. I’m a little bit disappointed but I’m not letting this deter me from watching the show. Anybody care to lend me some binoculars?

Dexter

My sister was urging me to watch this new TV series she bought a DVD of – Dexter. It’s another one of those wonderfully weird shows from Showtime (well, that’s only judging from Californication being from Showtime, too, and it’s quite weird. Good show, but in a very controversial way). I didn’t think I’m up for gruesome, crime stories, wherein the main character is the one perpetuating the crimes, albeit only against hardened criminals. But the first episode proved to be intriguing and I think I might stick around to watch the entire first season. Plus, Michael Hall (Dexter), David from Six Feet Under, is a really great actor. Here he plays a forensics expert by day who analyzes blood-splatter patterns, and a heartless killer by night, preying on those criminals who got away from law and justice.

There’s a reason why I stay away from crime shows, CSI, for example. I used to watch documentaries about real crime stories and they give me nightmares. But the whodunit scenarios are always compelling and the use of modern technology in investigations is quite interesting to learn about. The use of PCR, for example, to determine the identity of possible suspects and, in more extreme cases, it’s even curious how they use dental fragments to identify the victims. It must really pay to watch your oral health, if only to have dental records, then. No, really, a charlotte cosmetic dentist is maybe what you need while you’re well and hoping to do some oral reconstructions, but the former is a technology I fear we don’t have here in our country yet (or do we?).

Anyway, we’ll see if I’ll be able to go through season 1 without being squeamish about all those blood.

Laughlin

The last I heard of Sarah McLachlan, my favorite singer/songwriter/musician, is that she gave birth to her second child. She hasn’t been making new music lately and has been rehashing some of her biggest hits in compilation albums. As much as I’m hoping for her to create something in the vein of her Surfacing album, I’m only glad to hear that she’s releasing (make that re-releasing) Fumbling Towards Ecstacy as a 15th Anniversary Deluxe Edition. It includes the original Fumbling Towards Ecstasy album, Freedom Sessions, and a DVD loaded with live performances, music videos, behind the scenes footage, and more.

I’m still a bit surprised to find entries on Sarah McLaughlin online, as if such a big star shouldn’t have her name misspelled. I think maybe some people do have last names like that. Other people. All I gathered is that there is a place called Laughlin in Nevada, and if you’re coming there for a visit, you might want to check out the list of laughlin hotels the city has to offer.

Hope for the Gold

Manny Pacquiao did carry the Philippine flag in the opening ceremonies at the Beijing Olympics tonight. The 15-member Philippine delegation is said to be pinning its hope in boxing and taekwondo, hoping to end our country’s 12-year Olympic medal drought. It may be an uphill battle, but, as they say, hope springs eternal.

Meanwhile, Roger Federer, the outgoing world’s no. 1 tennis player, carried the flag for his country, Switzerland. He’s also celebrating his 27th birthday and has been claiming that winning the Olympics is as important to him as winning Wimbledon. Not that the memory of this year’s championship can be expected to make Federer’s pulse quicken in a good way. On the other hand, if I’m Mirka Vavrinec, I’ll surely need a pulse oximeter had I heard my man saying that meeting me at the Olympics (as they did during the Athens Olympics 8 years ago) is better than being the flag bearer this year.

Teen Spirit

When I first got my job, I was a few years out of my teens and my youngest sibling, my brother, was 9 years old. He just turned 18 a few days ago and I’m feeling a little bit nostalgic. I’m encouraging him to go join a band, if he wishes to, because he’s so good with the guitar and is actually very artistic. I’m not sure about his other creative talents yet (i.e., if he can write songs eventually) but so far he’s proving to have the one thing I wish I have -- inherent understanding of music notes. Here’s saying that I’ll gladly go for broke to support him if ever he’ll venture into anything that would further his musicality.

In the spirit of youth, here’s a song that may or may not mean “teen revolution,” sang in a very non-youthful way by Tori Amos.

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous
Here we are now, entertain us
I feel stupid and contagious
Here we are now, entertain us

Scales

I’ve been talking (and writing) about wanting to hit the gym again, after almost two years of “rest.” That’s actually more of a rest from the gym fees. I’m someone who actually enjoys working out because being inactive (while having a healthy apetite) always gives me this nagging feeling of being prone to serious diseases. Genetics doesn’t give me any peace of mind either. Lately, badminton has been an adequate alternative for me but now I’m kind of going through this phase of not enjoying it as much; also, my friends aren’t as addicted to the game as I am (or was). I don’t know if it’s psychological, but I sleep a lot more but feel exhausted a lot more when I’m not being physically active. They say “the more energy you give, the more energy you gain.” I think I believe that. It wouldn’t hurt to lose a few pounds as well in the process without resorting to weight loss products. It’s not really encouraging to buy new clothes, even if I badly need to, when I couldn’t maintain a certain weight. This is me talk vanity one day, BoZ edition, signing off.
