Ottoman/Bean Bags, I Like

As I’ve been spending a lot of time lately watching TV, I’m now longing for a really cool and comfortable Living Room Furniture – a bean bag and/or Ottomans.

Because I can’t really sit still on my bed and the other wooden  chair I have is so uncomfortable to sit at, I normally watch TV while lying down, which according to an optometrist I talked to is a bad, bad habit because it causes one to develop astigmatism. Besides, just look at the wicked colors of the seats above. Well, mainly the red one, but I’m sure you can find some other colors and variety from any Living room Furniture Store. It’s just a shame my apartment’s already too crowded. I may have to get rid of the beaten sofa bed to give space for this.

No Salt Eating

As someone who occassionally suffers from high blood pressure, I know how important it is for me to lower my salt intake. The doctor told me so, as if I need another reminder. The problem is, I’ve always loved salty foods – adobo, fish sauce with sinigang, or soy sauce in almost every grilled or fried fish or meat. No-salt foods, evem low-sodium ones, are bland, unsatisfying, and depressing. I don’t think I can ever live with it. I’d rather be a semi-vegetarian (which basically means I’m planning to have veggies in a majority of my meals but I’ll still have meat whenever craving sets in). To me, salty equates to flavor and good taste.

But, really, the doctor is right. Avoiding salty foods as a lifestyle will have a dramatic impact on the risk of developing hypertension or heart disease. I’ve read there are no salt seasonings available in the marklet, so maybe I can try that. Could be a good start in practicing healthy cooking and eating. I’m thinking maybe if I’ll manage to psyche myself enough and get used to to taste of less-salty foods, then it will eventually be like a habit, sort of like reprogramming my tastebuds.

There’s a Web site that sells no salt (and no sugar) seasonings, nosaltnosugar.com. They even have recipes and health articles there. It all looks promising that I might just be tempted to look for a local equivalent.

Migraines Lower Breast Cancer Risk

According to Reuters, a recent American study shows that women who have a history of migraine headaches are far less likely to develop breast cancer than other women. Good news for me, huh?!

Although the link is not clear, researchers suspect that hormones maybe playing a big role – higher estrogen means higher breast cancer risk, and women with chronic headaches “may have a chronically lower baseline estrogen.”

…the reduction in risk was for the most common types of breast cancers — those driven by hormones, such as estrogen-receptor positive breast cancer, which is fueled by estrogen, and progesterone-receptor positive breast cancer, which is fueled by progesterone – compared to women who did not have a history of such headaches - Dr. Christopher Li, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, WA

Bummer

Can’t sleep.

I miss my morning badminton buddies. I feel young there; I’m literally the youngest. I recently found these group of badminton enthusiasts who meet up every Tuesday and Thursday mornings, mommies and daddies and grandparents. A lot of them are intermediate to advanced players, to my delight. Plus, I get to learn some business stuff from some of them like buying real estate or looking for term life insurance quotes. Not a bad aside, huh?!

See that’s why I love badminton. I always find it amazing how many older people enjoy the game. They are even more regular players than I am. I have my Saturdays to play with the younger crowd, at times with 12-year-olds or below.

I just feel bad that I’m still awake and can’t play later today. Geez.

Concert Tickets

A group of my friends are excited about watching Rihanna’s and Chris Brown’s upcoming concert this month; I’d rather watch Hairspray, though. I’m glad they added a few more show dates because I haven’t checked for tickets. I don’t want to buy online just because the Web site selling tickets isn’t exactly easy to navigate. Besides, I bought tickets for Fiddler on the Roof online before and I almost regretted it. Not only because the show was quite dull (I loved the movie) but also because we almost arrived too late to claim the tickets at the ticket booth. I had to call the main branch from the cab just to plead them to have someone wait for a bit even if was already closing time. Had they not acquiesced, my online card payment would have come to waste.

A lot of people I know are still wary about online transactions. As for me, except for scenarios as described above, I like that we’re making progress with technology that way. I suppose we still have a way to go compared with how the first-world countries are working it. Concert tickets like Borgata Casino Event Center Tickets, Prudential Center Tickets, or Madison Square Garden Tickets are just a few clicks away. Go to Ebay and you’ll see every little thing from the really pricey such as condominium units to the simplest things such as key chains and stuff being auctioned online. It’s neat, really. It just needs a little getting used to. It wouldn’t hurt to be careful, too – always make sure you’re dealing with a secured Web site before making any kind of purchase.

Car Repair

One thing that makes me unexcitable about owning a car someday, well, obviously besides the steep oil price, is the high cost in maintenance. I’ve got lots of friends who drive their own cars and everybody’s complaining about the cost. Of course, even those concerns are overriden by the comfort of having a ready and faster means of transportation. But then again, there’s my fear of driving in the streets of Manila where everyone’s in a hurry and a lot of drivers are undisciplined and reckless.

I was riding in a friend’s car one time after a badminton game when there’s this sudden jolt from the back that pushed us forward rather forcefully. It turned out a mini-truck hit the car’s bumper, causing a huge dent from the impact. It was a harrowing experience for my friend as the truck’s driver managed to make a run for it. He brought his wheels to a car repair shop so it looked all normal all shiny again in a few days time but not without shelling out a huge chunk of money. Sure, that’s not something that happens everyday (knock on wood) but it would help to have a directory of auto body repair shops like collisionrepairexperts.com.

Blogging 101

I’m only too happy that this blog seems to be running smoothly these days, server-wise I mean. I’m actually afraid to say anything for fear that might jinx it. Anyway, I did get another domain over there at datedthings dot com but I just don’t have time right now to update regularly. Since that blog is supposed to be about old stuff, I need to actually look for (and analyze) old stuff – old movies, books, TV shows, musicals, and everything that would make people go “What now? Nobody’s talking about that stuff anymore.” I’m not sure how that will work out but I’d like to surprise myself.

So there’s a new version of WordPress, again – WordPress 2.6.3 – and I keep seeing this reminder to update eveytime I open my blog dashboard. But I’m a little adamant about doing so because it might mess up my blogs again. I guess I still need to read some web hosting articles to understand about codes and all; everytime I update, I encounter several sorts of problems – could be bugs or something. I’d probably check for web hosting tutorials online. This blog is hosted on a Windows server and datedthings is hosted on Linux. I did that purposely to check which one is better and easier to manipulate. I haven’t really figured it out. Anyway, if you’re planning to get a hosting service, make sure that you check for customer reviews first. It doesn’t hurt choosing a reliable host for starters.

Video Games

My brother is supposed to stay with us this week while he’s on a break from school. He’ll come with me get the guitar I had repaired at the Mall of Asia  several months back; I hope they haven’t sold it or dispensed of it yet, I’ve been too lazy to go malling lately. I’ll give him that guitar anyway because I’ve already given up on my ability to learn to be proficient with it.

Anyway, that’s going to be the replacement to what I initially promised – a Playstation 3. He’s in college now, anyway, I suppose he’ll appreciate more grown-up “toys.” Or not. I know some adult male friends who still go crazy over playstations or an Xbox 360. Someday, maybe I can buy a Nintendo Wii; I heard I can play tennis with that.

If you’re into video games, there’s an online site that provides a wide variety of choices. Just click on the links above to go to the online stores. More stores, more product choices, more savings. Knock yourselves out!
